What if we told you there was a restaurant in Birmingham where you could experience the tastes of India, with the finesse of fine dining and you could feast like a maharajah of old?

Well, this is what the new restaurant from Birmingham chef Aktar Islam promises. Opheem, a new 70-cover restaurant (and the first solo venture) from the former chef director of the Lasan Group, is set to open on Summer Row, in May, and will be a fantastic new addition to our city’s blossoming culinary scene.

“Opheem will take diners on an intoxicating culinary journey. We are going back to the future to explore the diverse culinary heritage of India and explore the foundations of this grand cuisine.” – Aktar Islam.

Taking his inspiration from the forward-thinking traditions of Indian cuisine and chefs from 13th Century to the present, and drawing on the influences of China, Persia, Arabia and Afghanistan, which permeated the cuisine from the chefs attached to the royal courts, Opheem will carry forward this spirit. Aktar believes there is still room for Indian cuisine to develop, grow and flourish and Opheem will be at the forefront of this.

Using the best seasonal ingredients, the menus will include some of the best produce of the British isles, combined with the flavours and recipes from ancient India. Diners will have different menu options, from beautiful a la carte dishes, to a tasting menu with optional wine pairings, and lighter, snacking plates served in the bar area. There will also be a 14-cover private dining room available to book.

With dishes including samudrapheni (octopus, tandoori spices and pickled carrot), a take on vindaloo (pork jowl, pickled vindaloo puree, star anise heritage carrots, roasted whey onion and confit garlic) and naashapaatee (pear and cassia leaf tart, almond and Bengali rice pudding ice cream), Opheem looks set to be a thrilling addition to Birmingham’s culinary offering. We can’t wait for the restaurant to open!
