Poetry Jam and Beatfreeks are celebrating their 5th Birthday this February and they want you to help them celebrate.
On Thursday 8 February, they will be holding a very special birthday party at Birmingham Town Hall (THSH).
Set up in 2013, Poetry Jam provides young people with a safe space to express themselves. Since their first event, held at Urban (Church St.) in February 2013, at which 45 people attended, they have seen their audiences grow and have held 46 live events with over 1150 poetry open mic slots. Now reaching audiences of up to 200 people squeezed into coffee shops, Beatfreeks has allowed over 4000 young people to experience the world of poetry, spoken word and storytelling.

At the very heart of this movement are young people sharing experiences and telling stories about themselves and the world. Poetry Jam has sparked careers and friendships and has helped build relationships (including a marriage, and a birth!). It has also seen the birth of Beatfreeks, a collective of companies and people exploring ‘creativity for good’.

So to mark this significant milestone in their journey, The Beatfreeks Collective are hosting a ‘Poetry Jam V Birthday Special’ with an after-party, in partnership with Town Hall Symphony Hall. Doors will open at 6.30pm, but if you’d like to be in with a chance to perform, arrive at 6pm to put your name into the open mic hat. The draw for poets will take place at 6.15pm sharp. The evening will kick off at 7pm with poetry and spoken word in their classic Poetry Jam format but there will also be loud music and the opportunity to dance your troubles away between sections, with resident DJ for the evening, Chakraman.
On the evening you will also be able to buy a special anthology, created to commemorate this significant birthday, featuring works from young people who have performed at previous Jams. Limited edition t-shirts will also be available to purchase on the night.

If you’re already a fan, then head down to the party and join the celebration of five years of Poetry Jam and Beatfreeks and the fantastic poetry scene we have in the city. Come on Brum, let’s get out there and show our support.
