One of Brum’s best bartenders has opened an intimate cocktail bar in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter – and it’s set to be your new favourite hangout.

Brum did a collective sigh of sadness when it was announced that long-standing gin bar (once named the best in the world), 40 St Paul’s, was closing its doors. It was a huge loss for Brum, and for the beautiful JQ. The saying goes that legends never die, and when news came about that this cool, intimate spot on Saint Paul’s Square was to become a new bar, one headed up by one of the very best bartenders in the UK, that collective sigh of sadness became one of excitement.
Simple Things is the dream of Toby Heap, who if you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting his cocktails you’ll know is one of the very, very best around. After a decade of dreaming, two years of planning, and six months of building, Simple Things is that dream come true. Another instance of Brum being awesome because business owners have a dream and take the risk and pour in the countless hours of hard work and dedication to make it come true, and to bring something exciting and fantastic to our city – and Brum is all the more unique and wonderful because of it.
Inspired by the mid-century and affordable luxury, this cosy and intimate 26-cover cocktail bar is the perfect place for your date night, your mate night, a quick tipple (or three) on a week night, or a long boozy affair on a weekend. Either way you do it, know you’re in for the best of times. Excellent cocktails, carefully curated wines, great beers, non-alcoholic bevs for those that don’t partake but enjoy drinking tasty tipples, and (of course) immaculate vibes.
Noteable drinks we’d like to draw your attention to on a menu that is all killer and no filler include: Passionberry & Vanilla (a Simple Things take on a well-known classic, using passionberry for the main passionfruit style of flavour and served gimlet-style – it’s fruit driven but with a subtle woody spice and vanilla note running throughout, with a passionfruit scented bubble), Grape & Citrus (a grape-led twist on the daiquiri where the citrus cuts through the bright grape flavours and Takamaka rum acts as a sturdy back bone to this classic sour style cocktail), and Brioche & Hazelnut (a rich and indulgent brown butter washed Rémy Martin VSOP and a brioche infusion using brioche baked by Levain & Cherry, balanced with a coffee infused oloroso sherry and a hazelnut distillate to create an absolute banger of a cocktail).
